Car paint is built in layers: primer, colour, and a transparent clear coat on top. Polishing only works on that last layer — it removes a thin film of clear coat along with the scratch sitting inside it.
There is a simple test you can do yourself. Run a fingernail across the scratch. If your nail does not catch, the scratch is within the clear coat and can most likely be polished out. If it catches, the scratch has gone through the clear coat — it can be made less visible, but not removed.
The other common case is a scuff from another car, a post or a shopping trolley. Very often what looks like a deep scratch is actually transferred paint sitting on top of your clear coat — and that comes off almost completely.

We inspect the damage under LED light and measure clear coat thickness at that exact spot. That tells us how much material can safely come off.
The area is washed and decontaminated. Polishing over a surface that still has grit on it means creating new scratches next to the old one.
We start with the least aggressive abrasive that could work. If that is not enough, we step up. Going the other way is not an option — starting too aggressively removes clear coat unnecessarily.
The treated area is refined with a finishing polish so the gloss matches the rest of the panel, then protected.

Not when it is done properly. The risk comes from polishing without measuring clear coat thickness, or starting with too aggressive an abrasive. We always measure at the damaged spot and begin with the gentlest combination that could achieve the result.
Light scuffs can sometimes be reduced by hand with a fine polish. The trouble starts with a machine: in inexperienced hands it easily burns through the clear coat on edges and body lines, where it is thinnest. That kind of damage cannot be polished back.
