A smell in a car is almost never in the air. It is in a material somewhere — the upholstery, the foam, the ventilation ducts or under a mat. That is why an air freshener from the petrol station does not fix it: it adds a second smell on top of the first, and within days you can smell both.

Where to Look for the Source
Before thinking about cleaning, it is worth finding the source. In most cases it is in one of five places, and only the first is obvious.
- Seat fabric and foam — the most common source when the smell is even throughout the cabin.
- Under the mats and floor covering — if the smell is stronger in the footwells and gets worse in damp weather.
- The boot and spare wheel well — a very common spot people never check. A leaked bottle or a forgotten bag.
- The ventilation system and cabin filter — if the smell appears specifically when you turn the blower on.
- The headliner — especially if the car has been smoked in. Tar settles into the headliner fabric and stays for years.
A simple test: leave the car closed in the sun for a few hours, then open the door and breathe in immediately. Heat intensifies the off-gassing, and at that moment the character of the smell — sweet, sour, musty or chemical — is far easier to identify than day to day.
Cigarette Smell
Cigarette smell is the hardest, because tar is sticky and settles on every surface at once: fabric, headliner, plastics, the inside of the glass and the ventilation ducts. That is exactly why cleaning the seats alone does not solve it.
What actually works: extraction cleaning of every fabric surface, separate treatment of the headliner, washing all hard surfaces and glass with a grease-cutting cleaner, replacing the cabin filter, and ozone treatment for the ventilation. If the car has been smoked in for years, two treatments may be needed.
Pet Odours
Pet smell comes from two sources: the hair itself, and skin oils that settle into the fabric. Hair hooks into the fibres so deeply that a vacuum will not lift it — it has to be raised with a rubber brush first, and only then does vacuuming work.
If an animal has had an accident in the car, that is a different situation. Urine contains urea crystals that reactivate with humidity — which is why the smell comes back on every damp day, even when the area looks clean. Only enzyme products, which break those compounds down, help here. Ordinary detergent does not.
Mould and Damp Smells
People usually describe this as a cellar or old-house smell, and it appears most often in spring. The cause is almost always water that got into the cabin and never dried: a blocked drain, a failed seal, a window left open in the rain, or simply winter snow off shoes.
The key point: mould does not grow on the surface of the fabric, it grows in the foam beneath it. That is why surface cleaning works for a few days. What is needed is extraction, which draws moisture and spores out of the depth, followed by thorough drying.
What Does Not Work (and Why)
- Air fresheners — they add a smell rather than removing one. Within days you notice both at once.
- Baking soda on the seats — absorbs some surface odour but never reaches the foam, and is then hard to vacuum out completely.
- A dish of vinegar in the car — absorbs a little but removes nothing from the fabric, and leaves its own smell.
- Scrubbing the surface with a sponge — often makes things worse by pushing contamination deeper into the foam.
- Airing the car out — only helps once the source has been removed. Otherwise the smell returns within hours.
When Ozone Treatment Is the Answer
An ozone generator fills the cabin with ozone, which oxidises odour molecules — including in places nothing can physically reach, such as ventilation ducts. It is a powerful solution, with one important caveat.
Ozone does not replace cleaning. If contamination is still sitting in the foam, ozone will remove the smell for a few weeks and then it comes back. The correct order is extraction cleaning first, to remove the source, and ozone afterwards to deal with whatever remains in ducts and inaccessible areas.
Keeping the Smell From Coming Back
- Replace the cabin filter annually or every 15,000 km — the cheapest step with the biggest effect.
- Do not leave wet items in the car: umbrellas, gym bags, swimwear or damp mats.
- In winter, take the mats out once a week and let them dry indoors.
- After the car has stood for a while, open the windows and let it air before switching the ventilation on.
- Have the interior professionally cleaned every 6–12 months, before contamination has a chance to build up.
